Roof Specifications
Materials:
Grass:
Matured Hyparrhenia Grass – selected from the best growing areas.
Ceiling Grass:
Sun dried selected Cape Reed.
Supplied directly from the Eastern Cape, exclusively to Evergreen Thatching.
Poles:
Selected CCA Treated saligna.
100 – 125mm top end diameter (SABS specification H4).
Lathes:
Selected CCA Treated 28 – 32 mm diameter (SABS specification H4).
Connectors:
Galvanised threaded rods, nuts and washers 12 -16 mm (as specified by engineer).
Used on all truss connections.
Nails:
75mm used on lathes.
150 – 200 mm on poles.
Sways:
3,15mm galvanised wire laid on each line of grass.
Binding Materials:
Bituminised sisal twine for fastening between sway and lathes.
Ridges:
Fibre glass ridging manufactured by ourselves, using high quality resin and extra fibreglass matt for strength and durability.
Construction:
Roof Pitch:
45 ° main roof and not less than 35° on secondary roofs i.e. dormer windows etc.
Truss Design & Spacing:
Typically tie beam as close to wall plate as possible with a king post and collar under ridge beams with queen posts if necessary, approximately 3 M apart (unless requested otherwise by engineer.)
Pole Centres:
Between 700 – 800 mm apart.
Grass Density:
Approximately 200 mm thick.
Ridge Construction:
Double gumpoles separated by kingpost and tied by a collar.
Ridge Capping:
Tied to lathe below with 1.6 mm galvanised wire, joints sealed with fibreglass & resin. The ridging is made to fit over the thatched section on both sides of the ridge.
